Governance

Governance engagement overview

Introduction

Governance is a different kind of skill set. I've learned this over 14+ years combined experience, 12+ years studying Governance and being recognised as a Chartered Member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors for 8+ years.

Good governance takes a mindset able to strike a balance between abundance, growth and optimism with risk, healthy scepticism and broader strategic consideration. The ability to live in the helicopter with eyes on what's coming over the horizon tomorrow while also staying in tune with what's happening directly on the ground today. The ability to ask great questions and provide leadership with the type of direction and support they need. Helping deliver on what's best for the organisation while ensuring a balance is maintained across multiple stakeholders needs and wants.

A board, whether a board of directors, trustees or an advisory board, shares traits like any other team. A group of people with a collective purpose, consistent repeatable processes and a dynamic that creates a whole greater than the sum.

Organisations must consider and prepare for multiple possible futures. The board must have the ability to steer an organisation through purpose, navigate complexity, overcome challenges, inevitably prevail through adversity and ultimately, grow.

The experience I offer comes from a place of having successfully navigated these various factors. Over the years I've served various orgnaisations from helping establish first boards to steering existing boards through strategy review and "level up" their governance practices to become more effective.

My many years of experience now helps me offer the following Governance services, either as a board member, board chair or independent advisor.

1. Establishment: first boards and frameworks.
2. Assessment: needs, capability, skills, strengths, gaps & culture.
3. Development: as above in point 2 plus development planning and guidance.
4. Appointment assistance: board members and CEO or GM.
